“Weapons” (2025) Review: A New Horror Film by Zach Cregger

Are you a fan of horror movies? If so, the latest film by director Zach Cregger, “Weapons,” might be just what you’re looking for. While it may not terrify the most hardened horror aficionados, it successfully delivers a solid thrill and provides some genuinely frightening moments for casual viewers. Much like classics such as “The Conjuring,” this film builds a consistent atmosphere of fear and suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The film’s story is set in a small town where 17 children from the same class mysteriously vanish overnight. The only survivor is a boy named Alex Lily (played by Cary Christopher). The plot keeps you guessing about why he was spared, building a layer of suspense from the very beginning. The story advances with a major reveal: Alex’s aunt, Gladys (Amy Madigan), is a witch. This twist sets the stage for a suspenseful journey where suspicion falls on various characters, as they try to uncover the truth behind the disappearances. Among them are Justin Gandy (Julia Garner), the children’s teacher, and Archer Graf (Josh Brolin), the father of one of the missing children, who each set out to solve the mystery on their own.

While the core plot may seem simple, Zach Cregger’s masterful direction elevates the film’s presentation. The cast has truly brought the characters to life, making their performances a strong point of the movie. The horror effects are particularly powerful and effectively create a sense of fear. There are several standout scenes, including a nightmare sequence where Archer dreams of all the children sitting silently with their heads down in a classroom. When one of the children looks up at him with a hauntingly effective makeup, the scene becomes a truly terrifying moment. This scene was also featured in the trailer, but it feels even more impactful within the context of the film.

A crucial element of any horror film is its background music and sound design. If the score is well-placed and aligns with the on-screen action, it can significantly enhance the tension and thrill. In “Weapons,” the BGM is highly effective and adds a powerful layer to the terrifying situations. The sound design plays a vital role in creating the scares and is a definite highlight of the film.
